Workplace Music Action

Recently on Linked in I saw this article on offensive music in the workplace. Another day, another conflict, right? When dealing with a colleague who is listening to music with offensive lyrics in a work setting it can be frustrating. It is always important to approach the situation professionally and respectfully. Here are 20 actions to consider in the workplace if you feel you need to address it:

  1. Familiarize yourself with the company policies and guidelines related to appropriate behavior in the workplace.

  2. Document instances of the offensive music being played to provide evidence if needed.

  3. Assess the situation to determine if the music is genuinely offensive or just personally unpleasant.

  4. Consider the office culture and policies regarding appropriate behavior.

  5. Speak privately with the colleague about the issue and avoid complaining others about it or you might generate a new problem

  6. Absolutely must have a good opening, “Disarming Statement” crafted from your understanding of their underlying needs (this is critical, message me for help on this)

  7. Use a non-confrontational body language, tone and approach when discussing the matter

  8. Express your concerns without being judgmental or aggressive.

  9. Highlight the impact the offensive lyrics may have on others in the office.

  10. Suggest alternative ways for the colleague to enjoy music without causing discomfort.

  11. Encourage the colleague to use headphones or earphones.

  12. Remind the colleague about maintaining a professional work environment.

  13. Discuss the potential consequences if the behavior continues.

  14. Offer to help find suitable alternatives or playlists with more appropriate content.

  15. Propose the use of a white noise machine or background music for the office to reduce individual disturbances.

  16. Bring up the issue with a supervisor or manager, if necessary.

  17. Suggest implementing a music policy that outlines acceptable genres or content in the workplace.

  18. Consider mediating a discussion between the colleague and any affected coworkers to find a mutually acceptable solution if many people are impacted and you are leading.

  19. Focus on maintaining a positive and professional relationship with the colleague throughout the process.

  20. Request a meeting with HR to address the issue formally, if the problem persists.

Remember, it's important to approach these situations with empathy and understanding while promoting a respectful work environment for everyone involved. It might be as easy as offering the suggestion about headphones. The “vibe” and energetic that you bring along with an effective Disarming Statement from start.

All my best and much love!

Dave
