Why You Might Be Feeling Left Out at Work?

Just 8 Legitimate Reasons Emails & Information is Not Shared Even Though We Want to Know

  1. Personal Privacy = Professional/Technical Issues Become Personal Private Issues

  2. Federal and State HR Laws prohibit – Consider OSHA, EEO, FLSA, NLRA, FMLA

  3. An Organization’s SOPs, Internal HR Standards and Best Practices

  4. Fear of Recipient(s) Sharing Private or Proprietary Data and/or Information

  5. Trying to Reduce “Meetings after the Meeting” (this can backfire)

  6. Consensus is Not Chosen as the Decision-making Process for that Particular Issue

  7. Technology Failure

  8. Avoiding “CC’ing the Devil” (getting everyone involved that doesn’t belong to pick sides)

Consider: Using “what” based questions to learn more about “why” one has been left out of an email train or conversation will have many benefits, including building further trust with questions that require explanation, not justification. Avoid the typical, disappointed or angry, “Why didn’t anyone tell me?” The answer might be one of the eight items listed above…or, it might be another one that isn’t included in the list.
