Some people just “have it!” and some think they don’t. The reality is that, like our emotional intelligence, we can build on what we were given. Whether you have natural confidence or are looking to improve your leadership presence, there are many things you can do to be pro-active on this part of your journey.
Check out these 20 ways you can build upon the vision you have of yourself and be more successful in your own skin, whether you are giving a major presentation, speaking at a meeting or just trying to better connect with others.
Exercise to burn off excess energy
Practice new techniques when it doesn’t matter (for instance, choose a new way to greet someone at the store)
Remember success and best practices
Visualize successful outcomes prior to meetings, introductions to new people and presentations
Increase your preparation levels
Seek out people that will provide honest feedback to help growth
Invite constructive criticism to people who have your best interest
Remember and focus on your strengths
Be positive. It is contagious.
Make good, sensitive eye contact with others
Stand tall and believe in yourself
Remember not to listen too much to the ego
Follow through on all promises and commitments
Create a vision and work to it
Create check points to monitor progress
Put yourself in situations that require you to stretch yourself, by choice.
Be reflective as much as possible…if you do not “show up” the way you want…think about how you could do it differently
Be fearless (or at least tell your fears to be quiet!)
Consider what would be the best outcomes for all people involved in whatever you are doing
Think about all the people in your history that doubted you and let those memories up and out
If you want to build your confidence and presence with others, regardless of the setting, you have to be mindful of what to do AND then actually do the work…even if uncomfortable, challenging or stressful. The reward you will receive from increasing your confidence and presence while not appearing arrogant will change your life.
All my best, Dave
