30% of people according to the last study I saw some years ago, do NOT want to be in a leadership position. Most likely, a benefit of this decision, is that stress levels are greatly reduced on a daily basis. 3 out of 10 people just want to go to work and do their job and then go home, not being responsible for the greater good…just their specific role and how it is done in the context of the greater good. And, many of us get that 100%! As we get older the challenges of leadership become more tiresome and stressful. Add a little Covid, job losses, costs of everything and a leader’s job just got even more tension filled.
“That’s why they pay you the big bucks” – to be a leader. As an aside, in a world filled with more and more tension, are younger leaders and new generations going to want the added pressure of being a supervisor? Either way, in the here and now, these are some ways leaders can reduce the stress:
Remind yourself that “stress” is supposed to happen with the job you do…it is normal, so normalize it
Communicate more often
Prioritize better
Delegate and Trust more
Ask for Permission and Apologize as needed
Walk the Talk and “Use Language Surgically”
Leadership Presence
Schedule a specific, mental day that has the least negative impact on your work every 1-3 months (or 1/3 or ½ a day)
Transition - before going inside to work and before walking in your home at days end
Get a Coach (You “can do it on your own” the question is, at what cost to your health and biz?”)
Have a great, reduced stress kind of a day!
All the best!
Dave
