Some Top Ways to Prevent Burnout Before, During and After Work

A recent study showed that Millennials are feeling the burnout more than other generations, even some more than generations that have been working for 20 years more. It might be because they were thrown into a pandemic with less training, experience and skills. It might be several other contributing factors we could examine, as well.

Regardless, every generation can benefit from taking the actions that prevent eventual burnout. If you want to know 20 ways you can put yourself in a better place and know how to avoid burnout:

  1. Professional and personal alone time each day is a necessity to recharge, reflect and go on

  2. Exercise (at work you can do a “Walk and Talk”)

  3. Breathing (you can say that’s so simple but the majority of people don’t breath to relax)

  4. Learn new skills (it will help us to stay humble as well)

  5. Develop resiliency (it is reported millennials are more burned out than people working 20 years)

  6. Get a Leadership Coach or mentor

  7. Watch less news

  8. Dare I say…meditate (you can do 1-2 minute “mediations” at your desk…don’t be fooled)

  9. Help someone as we often recharge when we are giving support to others

  10. Pause and actually embrace the pain because there are personal, professional and spiritual lessons to be learned!

  11. Set clear boundaries for yourself and try your best not to break them

  12. Sleep…turn off the TV, you are missing anything more valuable than REM and shut eye

  13. Eat…what we eat determines how much energy we have in between meals

  14. Swimming…ever found that swimming laps or water walking in the lanes can be meditative?

  15. Ask for two minutes…maybe you are bombarded with questions from colleagues or family and you need two minutes to clear your head

  16. Planned Transitions…if you are feeling a surge before getting out of the car into work or home take a second, focus on breathing and how to be positive and light

  17. Music…maybe change the music you listen to or add (get in tune with Mega Hertz – find your frequency)

  18. Hobbies

  19. Weights (for those getting older, a good weight lifting program will keep you healthy)

  20. Professional Hobbies (like maybe you teach something on the side that gives you more pleasure than dollars)

AND…What else do you do?!

One F.A.C.T. about all individuals is that they have been socialized, our unconscious thoughts and our personally written “story” have been developing since birth. Many people do not realize that their own issues dominate their behavior, almost like an ‘autopilot’ mode or default behavior. The question is…how can you re-write your “story”? Read on and find answers that will help you create your own life story.
