It is stressful to work at a job…and yet the thought of quitting a job may be even more disconcerting. Sometimes we feel like it would be an easy decision and then we evaluate what that would mean for our life at the moment…then skip it…forget it…tell ourselves we just need to suffer through it. Maybe so, however there may be real signs that you need to consider looking towards the next part of your journey. If you want to know what 15 of those signs might be:
Little opportunity for advancement within the organization or personal growth
You are asked to do things that go against your personal values or ethics
Every day you can’t wait to leave and each morning you don’t want to go
Your family and friends are telling you that you have changed (not for the good J)
You have opportunities in similar or different industries
Workplace Burnout seems to be more like Perpetual Burnout
The “Work-Life Balance” design you created is out of whack
Don’t quit unless you have tried changing yourself or the environment or your reactions to the things that happen to you
The values “on the poster” in the hallways are rarely true to your experience
Lack of trusting relationship with your direct supervisor
Lack of trusting relationships with your colleagues
Things start to happen that give you that, “the writing is on the wall” feeling.
Sunday night “dread of Mondays” seems like it’s happening more than on Sundays
You feel less likely to want to empathize, demonstrate care or give your full effort regularly
A little voice in your head is telling you the time to plan for the next part of the journey happens when you are both at work and not.
Don’t make any rash decisions. Consider that you might need a year’s worth of salary (or more) to get through the winding road of finding the next opportunity. That said, sometimes we have to say enough is enough is enough…I need to find inner peace and it can never happen here. If that’s the case, at least start considering options. Let me know if I can help support you.
Much love,
Dave
