We start, you start, the students and all their stakeholders start a new school year. So many people are impacted, from alarm clocks to traffic volume to difficult social and grade discussions, wins and losses and so much more. Even if you don’t have kids in school, you are likely impacted by this yearly shift. Here are some ways we can support ourselves and others who are impacted by this seemingly startling, yet scheduled event.
Start with Compassion
Remember that love is often a choice before it is a feeling
Try to slow down
Remember people all deal with transitions differently
Listen to understand, bear witness and not to problem solve
Drive safely around Bus Stops and School Busses (extra please)
Use “What Based Questions” when communicating most effectively to get answers
Remember we judge ourselves by our intentions and others by their behavior…not fair
Remember the importance of gratitude as a defining part of your attitude
Some people are grieving and dealing with heavy or impending loss
Smile more, pursue humor, acknowledge small moments of joy…help others feel this too
Teach someone something, then imagine teaching it to 30 different people at the same time- Empathy is paramount right now
Learn something brand new and experience humility and curiosity at the same time
Bear witness to someone dealing with loss or grieving by just listening…you will change their life
Be more calm on the road and don’t take it personally
There are so many other things we can do to help ourselves and others, hopefully one or two of these hit home and can help you push forward with something new or a great reminder!
Have a great week!
Much love,
Dave
